The lead image illustration I created for the Literary Tour section in our Tehran issue. Featuring artwork by Malekeh Nayiny.
Stranger’s Guide is a three-time National Magazine Award winning literary travel magazine. I created the design system for the cover and all interior spreads (including essay, photo essay, special project, first person narrative, etc). It is a somewhat rigid system, but I find ways to spice it up with fun typographic compositions which I co-create and design for each issue. I work closely with the executive editor on all photography selection (for photo essays as well as leads, etc) and work on developmental edits for visual sections and charts in each issue.

ABOUT STRANGER’S GUIDE

Before there were guidebooks, 18th- and 19th-century authors wrote “stranger’s guides” to cities and countries–pamphlets and books that combined helpful tips with particular and offbeat advice and context: the best boarding houses alongside bits of history, preferred brothels as well as facts about paleontology and poetry. They were personal, eccentric and intimate portrayals of place. Stranger’s Guide is a modern version of that idea—a company dedicated to reealing the intricacies of places across the globe, through both local and foreign eyes.
